Plasticizers are meant to plasticize vinyl resins and other polymers used in manufacture of cable compounds, artificial leather, industrial rubber goods, polymer building materials, linoleum, film and sheet materials, packaging films, PVC gaskets for fridges, gaskets for bottles and so on.

General requirements to plasticizers:

  • thermodynamic compatibility with a polymer;
  • low volatility;
  • no smell;
  • chemical inertness;
  • resistance to extraction out of polymer by liquids (oils, detergents, solvents);
  • decomposition temperature of plasticizer should not exceed processing temperature of polymer;
  • environmental safety, nontoxicity.

About 90% of plasticizers belong to ester group. The leading part of this group consists of phthalate ester. Phthalates makes more than 80% of the market, more than 90% of the phthalates produced are used to plasticize PVC.

The most widely used among industrial plasticizers are di/2-ethylhexyl/ phthalate (di-octyl phthalate, DOP), di-isononyl phthalate (DINP) and di-butyl phthalate (DBP). They are used in construction materials, cable compounds, in building industry, in things of everyday use, in children’s toys, and packaging materials.

Esters of sebacic acid and adipic acid are used to manufacture materials resistant to low temperatures and UF light. Dioctyl sebacate (DOS) and di/2-ethylhexyl/adipate are plasticizers most widely used to manufacture films for food packaging, footware, structural sections, cables, hoses and many other things of everyday use.
